Inauguration FAQ’s:
Where will the Inauguration ceremony take place and when?
- The swearing in of the new President of the United States will take place on Monday, 20th January 2025 on the western steps of the U.S. Capitol. The ceremony should start at 10:00 a.m. but that is not yet official.
What it the best way to get to the U.S. Capitol?
- Starting two or three days before the ceremony, streets around the U.S. Capitol will be closed and inaccessible to vehicle traffic. The area of the street closures will grow progressively larger as the ceremony approaches and most streets around the U.S. Capitol and National Mall will be closed. The best way to get to the Capitol from the Fairmont will be by using public transportation, specifically the Red Line from Dupont Circle to Gallery Place or Union Station or the Blue or Orange Lines from Foggy Bottom-GWU to L’Enfant Plaza or Federal City SW. Please be alert to station closures on Inauguration Day.
What will security be like?
- As with every major event in the nation’s capital, you can expect a noticeable presence of officers from the Metropolitan Police Department and various federal law enforcement agencies. You can expect that some areas in and around the Inauguration festivities will require security screening and you will need to pass through metal detectors. This experience will be similar to what you may encounter when boarding an airplane.
- There will also be heightened sensitivity to baggage left unattended. Individual venues not related to the official schedule of events may also set up similar security screenings. Because of these precautions and the street closures noted above, you will need to allow extra travel time when attending official Inaugural events. Please be mindful to be courteous to our local law enforcement personnel, they are here to protect us all.
What will transportation be like on the days leading up to the Inauguration?
- Due to road closures and the number of people expected to come to Washington, expect the city to be very busy. Make sure that you allow for plenty of extra time to get to any special events or appointments.
- It is also important to note that sedan service around the city and to and from the airports will be in very high demand. We strongly recommend making reservations as early as possible. We also recommend BLS Limo for your transportation needs. You may contact them at www.blslimogroup.com or (800) 424-2971.
- Ride Share services will also be available in the city over the Inauguration period. Due to demand, you should expect delays and surge pricing.
What will the weather be like?
- Expect it to be cold. It’s the middle of January and there’s a high likelihood that temperatures will be at or below freezing on Inauguration Day morning. Please be sure to bring a warm coat, hat, and gloves. Unless you have tickets to the event on the Capitol steps, plan to be standing most of the morning, comfortable shoes are a must.
Where are the Inauguration balls held?
- The official Inauguration balls are expected to be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Some officially sanctioned events may be held at other venues in the city, as well.
What else is there to do during the Inauguration week?
- Other than the ceremony, the parade up Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House, and the Inauguration balls, you can expect that other balls and galas will be held in the city prior to Inauguration Day. While you can expect the city to be busy, please note that most of the city’s attractions—the Smithsonian museums, National Gallery of Art, National Archives, and memorials—will be open as usual and ready for you to visit.
